An Introduction to the Brahma Viharas

November 8 – December 13
10:30 am – 11:15 am CT
(no class Dec 6 due to Rohatsu)
Led by Jozen Jonathon Fielder

The Brahma Viharas are four foundational virtues in Buddhism and meditation practice. They appear throughout early Buddhist texts such as the Pali Canon and are central in traditions like Theravāda Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and modern mindfulness practices.

The four Brahma vihāras are:

Mettā or loving-kindness
Karuṇā or compassion
Muditā  or sympathetic joy
Upekkhā or equanimity

Over five weeks, we will explore these four virtues deeper and learn ways to develop them both as ethical attitudes and as meditation exercises.

We will systematically cultivate them towards ourselves, our loved ones, neutral people, difficult people and eventually all beings. We will also explore the “near enemies” and the “far enemies” of each of the four Brahma vihāras and look at ways to avoid these arising in our practice.
